FSC tid-bit

*Above image (printed by us!) is Chronicle Books‘ Change the World for Ten Bucks, buy your copy here!

In order to add a FSC logo to a book, every part of the book must use FSC materials.

For example:

A hardback book’s boards, case, ends, jacket, and text must all be FSC.

Kappa board is FSC certified
Wibalin is FSC certified

Lamination and finish usually doesn’t matter. So you can totally have an FSC certified book and then laminate every single page if you want!

To use any the FSC trademarks, you must obtain authorization:

+ the initials “FSC”
+ the name “Forest Stewardship Council”
+ the “checkmark-and-tree” logo

His ranges include the Imperial War Museum, Southwold Pier, The Globe Theatre, Orient Express & Royal Academy of Scotland. We are delighted to produce these wonderful products including notebooks, pencil sets, notecards, pop-ups, bookmarks, journals and memo boxes!

The difference between a digital and wet proof:

Wet Proof: Proof made on a proofing press using the plates, ink, and paper specified for the job. Also known as press proofs.

+ The color is more accurate for black and white, duotone, and 4-color black and white images or for PMS colors.

+ Wet proofs use the same paper type and weight as it will be used during manufacturing.

Digital Proof: Page proofs produced from computer to paper via laser or inkjet.

+ Translating Digital proofs to Printed sheets: digital proofs are warmer than wet proofs because of the nature of chemical ink–it is different from actual printing ink. The color tolerance between digital proofs against the press sheet is about 10% to 15%.

+Digital proofs are the fastest to output (it takes about thirty minutes to output eight pages of an A4 size).

Un mensaje en clave (A coded [coated] message)

Image above is without lamination

Image above is with lamination

There are quite a few different types of varnishing that you can apply on a cover in order to get a special effect. But if you are printing a paperback cover be careful, because some of them can cause a creasing effect. If you wish to apply a huge extension of structured varnishing on a paperback cover, make sure to laminate it first, otherwise it will run the risk to crease. The whole procedure will be the following: first print your cover, then laminate it and finally apply spot structured varnishing.

Sheet size/ Binding

Click on the image above to learn more about different binding styles.

We had a project go from 6-1/4 x 8-1/4″ to 7 x 9″: the 6-1/4″ x  8-1/4″ size is able to be printed on a sheet that allows for 16pp on each side, but because the paper is too thick to bind in 32′s (book is printing on 128gsm matt), we would then cut the sheet in half and bind them in 16s.

The 7 x 9″ size is able to be printed on a sheet that allows for 8pp on each side, and this would also be bound in 16′s.

If the paper weight is below 100gsm, we’re able to bind in 32′s.  Anything over 100gsm must be bound in 16′s as it’s too thick for the sewing machine.

Binding 101,

Sales conference holiday party

Hello from Asia Pacific Offset (DC, NY, SF, SP, UK [not everyone made it into the photo])!

Your printing questions answered!

Q:
Is there any issue with printing 400% black? There is a children’s book we’re doing that may need to be adjusted if this is an issue. I know some printers need black to be below 300%.

A:
We normally ask that the maximum ink density is 300% for each ink (CMY & K), but for coated GLOSSY sheets that density can increase to 350%.  For uncoated or coated MATT sheets, we suggest sticking to 300% or lower.  One thing to think about with high ink density is offsetting:  if you want to have a super saturated sheet, a varnish should really be applied to prevent offset.

Hope this helps!

Post Sales Conference…

We all enjoyed coming together for our annual sales conference in Washington, DC. It was a great meeting where we shared valuable information that should help make our processes even more effective.

There was time for fun with a delicious dinner at Ristorante Posto in Logan Circle.  We all recommend this spot to any DC visitors. http://www.postodc.com/

Now, it’s back to work!

Lenticular Covers…did you know?

Did you know that the the lines running on a lenticular cover can be made to run horizontally or vertically? Normally, the lines run vertically. This means that you move your cover left to right to make the image move and when the lines run horizontally, the cover will need to be moved top to bottom to make the image.

Availability of Kinmari FSC matt art paper

Many clients have been asking about the availability of Kinmari FSC matt art paper following the Japanese tsunami earlier this year.  We are pleased to confirm that the manufacturing is almost back to normal and the mill is exporting for the Hong Kong market.  The lead time is as before, approx. 3 months and the closing date for paper indent is 15th of the month.  The minimum tonnage is a full container which is about 18 metric tons.  Unfortunately Kinmari is not generally available on the local market and so it is not an option for smaller projects (sorry!) – this also means we are unable to ‘top up’ paper orders or replenish smaller quantities.  Please also note that it is slightly more expensive than other matt art papers; for example it is 3-5% more expensive than Chinese Gold East matt art which has PEFC certification.

Asia Pacific uses the finest grades of coated papers and binder boards. We have stock available in Hong Kong and also order direct from paper mills for more unusual trim sizes and high-quantity print runs. All of the text paper that Asia Pacific uses is acid-free and ph neutral. Recycled, FSC and PEFC certified papers are also available but are more expensive and minimum quantities may apply.

In the world of lamination…

…you have gloss lamination, matte lamination, scuff free matte lamination and soft touch lamination.

Gloss lamination : glossy film finish
Matte lamination : matte film finish
Scuff free matte lamination : minimizes finger prints and scuffing
Soft touch lamination : Another alternative

- The material is strictly available in the US or Europe.
- MOQ is 1 roll, so depending on the project you might not meet this MOQ.
- It requires special machinery for lamination which is only available in HKG, so the case will be printed in China, shipped to HKG for lamination, and shipped back into China for binding.

Hurricane Story was printed 4-color on an e-smooth cloth over a board, which really gives the book a unique look. The interior is also printed 4-color on uncoated paper.

We highly suggest picking up a copy, the Holga Camera that was used to photograph has a very interesting look.

A little on dehumidification

We all know that our boards are dehumidified before case-making (right??).

Regular hardbound books are also dehumidified after binding, but before being placed in cartons. Enclosed wire-o books, however, are NOT dehumidified after binding, and here’s why:

The case does not press onto the text book-block completely; there’s a bit of space between the case and the book-block.  So, if we dehumidified the bound books, the text pages will warp and curl.   A regular hardbound book can be dehumidified because the case keeps the pages flat during dehumidification.

Why doesn’t my screen look like my printed proof?

The Printing Spectrum

Note These Statistics:

- It is estimated that the human eye can see BILLIONS of colors.
- A computer monitor can display 16 MILLION colors.
- Photographic film can capture approximately 15 THOUSAND colors.
- A printing press can accurately represent about 5 THOUSAND colors.

The color reproduction process is designed to trick the human eye into thinking it is seeing more colors than are really there. Although skilled technicians and the latest printing technology is utilized in this process, it is physically impossible to match the colors of a transparency in proofing and the final printed product.
